The history of the Callejón del beso
(the alley of the kiss) of Guanajuato is
a tragic romance, similar to that of Romeo and Juliet. Doña Carmen was
deeply in love with Don Luis, a poor miner, to the despair of his father, a man
greedy and violent. Although Doña Carmen's father has confined her
daughter in her room to prevent her to see his beloved, Don Luis bought the
house that stood on the other side of the small alley and they were thus able
to exchange a kiss examined their balconies. As often happens in romantic
tragedies, the father arrived angry in Doña Carmen chamber and killed, while
Don Luis was still holding his hand.
